When I asked Proof. Barbarism how Virginia Tech campus influenced his study life, he smiled and shared his story with me happily. He said the first time he walked around in Virginia Tech, he just fell in love with it and noticed that this place was the very place he wanted to go without even learning about the programs. He thought the campus Just felt right to him. It had a consistent style, a great level of public students’ space from big wide open areas to little shelter private gathering areas. These were all what he thought a college should be like. From his point of view, campus landscape really has an unimaginable effect on students’ lives. Proof. Barbarism did some campus design project when he was working for design firms. When I asked the key points when designing a campus, he thought a few seconds and figured out two main points which were a sense of scale and a sense of place. He explained that a sense of scale should bring comforts to people, for example, a sense of enclosure enough to feel like you are not standing in the middle a big field. The designer should leave enough space to let tons of students to walk between teaching buildings during the ten-minute break. When talking about a sense of place, he used a very effective example which I easily understood. He said to me:† k, meet me at the bell tower, you know where we meet? † The answer was obviously positive. In fact, that’s the sense of place, the bell tower has its own location and it’s very different from the other places. Both a sense of place and a sense of scale were the two key points he mentioned for campus design. After asking some questions about his experience being a student and a landscape architect, we shared some different opinions on Purdue campus design. We reached agreements on some issues. For example, we both thought State Street was kind of annoying because it cut the campus into two pieces. I remember the first time I arrived in Purdue in August, I let this campus was Just the north side of State Street. Proof. Barbarism nodded his head when I was talking and added his comments that there should be a special entry sign on State Street to let people know they were arriving in Purdue campus. We both thought State Street should be a good connection between the north and the south parts instead of being an awkward cut line of the whole campus. When talking about the locations of residence halls, we held different opinions. From my perspectives, Purdue should place the residence halls around teaching alluding so that students can have only a 5-minute walk to class Just like Hawkins Hall. However, Proof. Barbarism didn’t agree with me. He shifted his chair, thought a few seconds and put some important points which I hadn’t thought of before. He said the reason why many campus put academic areas separated from living areas was because their different functions. Purdue clustered most of the residence halls because they shared some facilities like dining courts, laundry systems and open space for fun. On the other hand, academic areas need a quite academic atmosphere tit libraries and laboratories. Considering these two different functions, it was better to separate residence halls and teaching buildings Just like what Purdue had done. Though we had different ideas of where to place residence halls, we had the same idea with respect to making the campus more pedestrian-oriented especially the way from residence halls to teaching buildings. Proof. Barbarism told me his first impression of Purdue campus was that it’s an automobile-oriented campus. In fact, I couldn’t agree more. There are not any interesting views along the street. I Just walk own the street and the only thing could stop me is the crossing. We both think the next step Purdue should consider is the design of State Street corridor. State Street is very important not only because it’s a very busy street but also because driving though gives a quick view of Purdue campus especially for drivers who Just pass by. This street might be driver’s first impression of Purdue campus. The discussion was so involving that I almost lost track of time. Finally, Proof. Barbarism told me the good news was that most of the improvements we talked about will show up in the future master plans. Purdue amp’s designers are trying their best to improve the whole environment. He said what we should do was Just to wait and see. Thanks to Proof. Barbarism for his time to let me think about campus design with him together. I learned a lot about not only some specific terms of campus design but also some logical thinking methods to judge things like where to put residence halls. The state of disorientation my mind is in makes it arduous to judge the amount of time passed, but eventually my ey es begin to detect vague traces of light. Sitting up, or rather, trying to – for I am stopped by rough hands aggressively pushing me down, back towards the rotten dampness and putrid stench of the wood – I attempt to map my surroundings. Twisting my head around in the little room that I have, I am greeted by the numerous faces of those like me, struggling to get back to the edge of the loosely tied together wood, where there is enough airspace to, at least momentarily, breathe comfortably. With whatever little strength I have left in my limbs, I grope and forcibly push my way amongst the masses of entwined limbs, to a more spacious spot on the decrepit raft, I take a deep breath – though instead of the sweet satisfaction of oxygen, all I feel is the sharp sting of salt in the air. The air of chaos on the raft is inescapable, nausea fills my body; I am overcome with fear. Looking up, all I can see is grey and black filling up the entirety of the heavens, the promise of an impending storm making itself visible through their incessant rumbling. Just as the clouds threaten to carry out their fearfully anticipated promise, a strong sense of dà ©jà  -vu strikes me, and like a submerging corpse in a quicksa nd, dread sinks its fangs into my heart. The miserable faces, the writhing bodies, the entwined masses of flesh – it all makes sense now. I have somehow entered the Raft of Medusa. Fierce bouts of lightning strike threateningly close to the raft, which is now my only safe haven. I would be lying if I said the dark cloud that has settled ominously over the raft hasnt caused a similar cloud of depression in my head, deluging any rational thought that may have previously occupied my brain. The tumultuous waves seem not to care about my newfound depression and, take the opportunity to toss me about the edge of the raft. It is only after the waves have relented in their violent assault that I notice the cut on my upper thigh. It is small, and blood hardly flows out, but the salt in the ocean water makes tears sting the back of my eyes, but I do not let them spill. I am sure more than half a day has passed now, and with my eyes better adjusted to the paltry amount of light, I can recognise the corpses of many Id seen previously alive. I wait for that oh-so-familiar bout of anxiety to settle itself in my gut, but it never comes. Looking around, I can spot those still alive, feebly pushing corpses into the water. My eyes follow the motion of the bodies in the murky water as they splash about amongst the already bloated corpses floating around. Contemplating the corpses further, I can detect faint marks on their limbs; almost like those left behind by teeth. I shun the thought – my eyes must be deceiving themselves. Its a small miracle that Im one of the few still surviving, then again, it appears Ive joined the party a little later than most others. Ignoring my relentless thoughts, I look down at my thigh again, using my wrinkled fingers to remove the flimsy cloth covering my leg, only to discover the putrid stench of yellow pus. Even blood was better than this. The underlying nausea of it all finally takes over and I haul my face over the edge of the raft, and get rid of the acrid bile that has been trying to get itself out of my system for so long. I am rooted to the spot; now I am truly trapped and with my recently developed state of helplessness, I now notice the roving eyes of those left settle on me. I almost want to be put out of my misery now – their stares still havent abated, and the anxiety of anticipating why seems worse than anything their intentions can contain. My skin is wrinkled seemingly beyond recovery and of a pallid hue, my fingers too withered to even move, and the infection on my thigh making me feel practically paralysed. I fight against closing my eyes, and giving in to the call of the blissful void, the darkness. I have lost the ability to even estimate how much time has passed – hours, days, weeks? I do not know, the only constant in my struggle being the incessant bawling and unforgiv ing gazes of those remaining. Before I can sink further into the quicksand of my disconcerting thoughts, I am dragged out of numb stupor by the oppressive presence of those remaining. I am now hyper-aware of the warm huffs of damp air I can only assume is their breath, and their glaring, predatory eyes. My heart starts thumping furiously again, making my chest feel like a cruel cage, and I am almost comforted by the actions morbid familiarity. Just then, I feel a sharp intake of air behind me, and in a flash, a pair of canines sink themselves into the flesh of my paralysed neck. I dont screech, or react in any way at all. I am somehow incapable of even reacting, frozen to the spot, shock paralysing me further as I can feel more teeth join in, and I lie there, helpless, waiting in trepidation as the feeble ray of light, that my eyes could previously detect, fades into darkness.

It's not the score that other people say you should get. It's not the score that sounds right. This score is mathematically determined by researching the colleges you want to apply to. If you don't calculate this score, you'll be led astray from the study plan that's best for you. Once you have your target score, compare your score with this target score. How likely are you to improve your score to this level? Here's a set of very general guidelines from my personal experience with thousands of students (we'll be using the 1600 scale of the new SAT): SAT Score ACT Score What do I need to do to get this improvement? Difficulty +0-50 +0-1 Some prep before the test. You might achieve this score improvement just by retaking the test if you did especially poorly last time. Not too hard, especially if you've taken the test just once +50-160 +1-4 Serious prep on a dedicated schedule. You'll need a smart system to figure out where your weaknesses lie and how to improve them. You won't be able to achieve this just through sheer effort. Possible with hard work and smart studying +160-260 +4-7 Very serious prep. You have some major gaps to fill before you start mastering the test. You will benefit from a personal tutor who can spot your weaknesses and teach you strategies. Possible with serious dedication, time, and a great study plan +260-400 +7-10 Dedicated prep for an extended period of time. You will most likely need an excellent 1-on-1 tutor who can teach you the fundamentals and make sure you stay committed. Difficult, but possible for the very motivated. 400+ 10+ Nearly re-education. You have major content gaps from school and need to be taught fundamental content. You'll need hundreds of hours of work. Very difficult. Re-evaluate your target colleges if possible. (if you're using the 2400 scale of the Old SAT, then just multiply each of the range values by 1.5) These are general guidelines and depend heavily on your exact situation. As we'll soon explain, the more you've prepped and the more tests you've taken up to this point, the harder it is to improve your score from here on. If you've taken the test 5 times and prepped hard, improving your test score on the 6th test by 100 points will be difficult. You'll need a completely different approach from you've already tried to make any improvements from this point forward. If you've taken the test several times by this point, you might be worried that colleges will look down on your many test entries. This is a common myth that we're going to bust right now. Myth: Colleges Care How Many Times You've Taken the SAT/ACT. Not true! You might have heard the idea that when colleges see your SAT/ACT scores, they take into account how many tests you've taken. If you've taken 10 tests, they'll wonder what's wrong with you, especially if you don't improve from test to test. The reason this myth exists is that this used to be true. Back in the old days (before 2009), if you took the SAT and applied to college, the College Board always required you to send ALL your scores to every college. If you took the test too many times and didn't improve, the school might potentially look down on this. This system has totally changed.The SAT now uses a system called Score Choice. For the majority of schools, you can choose which test dates you want to report to the school. They'll either take your highest test score in a single setting, or your highest section score from all the tests you send (creating your Superscore). See for yourself: the College Board has a list of over 1,500 colleges and their Score Choice participation. The majority of schools participate in Score Choice, where you can choose which test scores you send. Those that don't are marked by "All Scores" - they require you to send all your scores from the College Board. Notable "All Scores" institutions are the CUNY system and University of California. But even for these "All Scores" institutions, they won't care all that much about your other test scores. All they want to see is your highest test score, because that's all that actually matters to them. Take it straight from the University of California itself, which requires All Scores sent: "For the SAT Reasoning Test, we will focus on the highest total score from a single test date." What about the ACT? The ACT has never required you to submit all your test scores. In fact, you must pay a separate fee for each test score you send to every college, which can end up costing quite a lot. Because the schools will never see any ACT score you don't send them, you're free to send them just your highest score. There are a few schools that require all ACT scores sent, but they're in the far minority. So how many times can you take the SAT or ACT? As many times as you want.What actually matters at the end of the day is your highest score. By now, you should have your SAT target score or ACT target score firmly in mind, and you know you want to improve to that point. Whether you can reachit depends on a few main factors. #1: Did you underperform on the official test, and you know you could have done better? A fluke test happens to the best of us. You might not have been feeling well that day. You might have gotten distracted during a reading passage that was especially difficult. You might have had a family situation that stressed you out the morning of the test. If your official test score is 100 SAT points or 2 ACT points lower than your consistent practice test score, RETAKEthe test. There's a lot of variation from test to test, and chances are very good that if you take the test again, you'll get a better score the second time. I've seen students swing as much as 500 points upward between two tests a month apart, simply because they had a terrible day the first time and knocked the second test out of the park. 2) How many times have you taken the SAT or ACT before? Here are some simple guidelines. Only taken the test once: DEFINITELYtake it again. Both the College Board and the ACTpublish results that show that most students (over 50%) who take the test a second time improve their score. Furthermore, the lower your starting score is, the more likely your second test is to improve. You should try to prep as well as you can, but even if you just take the test, odds are that you'll improve your score. Taken the test twice: Lean towards taking it again. If you prep, you'll have a much better chance at improving your score. Furthermore, because most schools take a Superscore, the chances that you'll improve your Superscore are very good. Taken the test 3 or more times:That depends onthis next question: 3) How much have you already studied, and how did you prep? The less you've prepped before, the more likely you can improve your score. If you try what you've been doing with just a little more effort, you'll be disappointed with your results.
